he
attended the franklin public school system.
at an early age his father passed away and he could
not continue his education. he had to seek employment in order to
support his mother and younger brother.
he was a caddy at the wallkill country club. he
learned the basic skills of the golf game in this capacity. he is
listed for eight golf crowns in the 1985 wallkill country club
yearbook. these championships started in 1927 and ended in 1935.
he won championships in: 1927, 1928, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934
and 1935.
in 1935 he tied the par record score of 68 in a
foursome of the sussex country club course in
newton. he won the tri-club golf championship in 1934 and 1935.
during this period his competitive golf was limited to the tri-club
which was made up of franklin, newton and hackettstown.
