    John R. Bennett - EARL L. DECKER - Edwin M. Fogelson

    CARL O. JOHNSON - Philip A. Squier

    John R. Bennett 

    Graduated from Franklin High School in 1933.  He played on the high school golf team, which he helped to organize in his junior and senior years.

    At Penn State University he earned his bachelor Degree and Maters Degree in Education.  In his Junior and Senior years, he earned varsity golf letters.  In 1937, he was elected captain of the Penn State Golf Team.

    In 1947 he won the Franklin Golf Club Championship.  From 1948 to 1956, he was the title holder at the Lake Mohawk Golf Club.  In the 1950s, he won 3 State Pro-Amateur events with Marie Carfagno.

    He had an outstanding teaching career.  In 1960, he was appointed Superintendent in Toms River, NJ.  He held this position until he retired in 1977.

    At the present time he continues to play his favorite sport – golf.

    EARL L. DECKER 

    An outstanding baseball player, in the highly competitive Sussex County Twilight League, in the 1930’s.  He also participated in the Newton Firemen’s League.

    He was a proficient bowler possessing a 193 average in the Industrial and Sussex County A leagues.

    He was a member of the Newton Recreation Commission for 6 years.  A loyal supporter of the Junior Playground Blue Jays baseball teams at Memory Park.

    He coached the Newton Little League Wildcats for 12 years.    His teams won 10 titles in 12 years.

    He was the Mayor of the Town of Newton from July 1961 to July 1962.

    He was the Newton Fire Chief in 1969.

    At the present time, he is retired and resides in Newton, NJ.

    Edwin M. Fogelson - Honorary Member 

    Graduated from Newton High School in 1948 after serving in the US Navy for 2 years.  Earned varsity letters in football and basketball.  Attended Oklahoma A. & M.  In 1948 played FresHMAN football.  Equipment manager for the Franklin Miners Football team for many years.  Helped organize and played with the Newton AA football team.

    Charter member of the Newton Midget Football program.  Coached and managed the George A. Fetzer Chiefs Basketball team in the 1950s to 219-48 season.  This semi-pro team won many league titles and tournament championships.  Held offices in the Newton Jr. Athletic League and coached Babe Ruth team.  Served as Vice President in 1981.  President in 1982 and Secretary from 1985-1987 of the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame.

    Served in the Navy during World War II and Korean War.  He is now President of the USS New Jersey Veterans Assn.  1986-1990  He is a Member of the Newton Planning Board, a Charter member of the Newton VFW, Member of the American Legion, the Harmony Lodge No. 8 F & AM.  The Tall Cedars of Lebanon Center of Sussex County.

    CARL O. JOHNSON 

    GRADUATED FROM NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL IN 1933.

    DURING HIS JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEARS, HE EARNED VARSITY LETTERS IN WRESTLING.

    IN STATES HE WAS CHAMPION IN 1932 AND 1933.

    HE WAS A MEMBER OF COACH HENRY BORESCH’S NEWTON BOYS CLUB FOR 7 YEARS.  IN 1933, IN THE EASTERN STATES INTERSCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS, HE PLACED 2ND IN THE 112 LB. CLASS.

    IN THE N.J. AAU CHAMPIONSHIPS, FROM 1934 THROUGH 1940, HE WON TWO 1ST PLACES, THREE 2ND PLACES AND TWO 3RD PLACES.

    IN WORLD WAR II, HE SERVED IN ICELAND, NORMANDY AND IWO JIMA WITH THE SEABEES.

    BYRAM TOWNSHIP RECOGNITION.  FROM 1963 TO 1971, HE WAS A PRIME MOVER IN DEVELOPING A SPORTS COMPLEX IN HIS COMMUNITY.  IN APPRECIATION FOR HIS DEDICATION AND SERVICE, THE PARK WAS NAMED  “THE C.O. JOHNSON ATHLETIC FIELD”.

    HE SERVED BYRAM TOWNSHIP FOR 27 YEARS AS MAYOR AND COMMITTEEMAN.

    HIS PRIME OBJECTIVE AT PRESENT IS TO HELP SERVE THE YOUTH IN BYRAM TOWNSHIP.

    Philip A. Squier 

    Graduated from newton high school in 1962.  earned varsity letters in basketball, baseball and football.  in 1960, named honorable mention all american in dell magazine publication in basketball.

    in 1961, he made the new jersey herAlD all county baseball and basketball teams.  also in 1961, in the newark star ledger, he made all stAte honorable mention in baseball.   in basketball, he made all state group 2, THIRD team.

    in 1962, he set a lakeland conference basketball scoring record.

    in 1967, he graduated from davidson with a ba degree.  he earned varsity letters in basketball, baseball and golf.  he was selected to the all tournament team in charlotte, n.c. in 1965 and 1966.

    in 1966, he played in the eastern basketball league.

    at the present time he is living in hobe sound, fl where he is concentrating on his golf fame while participating in the florida state amateur match play tournament.
